The Alchemist

I put The Alchemist in my recommended readings. I read the book about 4 1/2 years ago, after a trip to New York City. A dear old friend from high school lives there, and my visit to the big city was a trip back in time with him. It was 5 days of touring, eating, museums, cab rides, music and reminiscing. I had just turned 23 years old, and felt on the verge of a major transition. Actually, I felt "on the verge" through my entire early twenties, but, who doesn't?

My friend, Joe, recommended the book to me one night when we were philosophizing over dinner. He told me The Alchemist changed his life, gave him a new perspective. Curious, I couldn't wait to find a bookstore to raid so I could get my hands on this book. As soon as I got back to San Diego I did.

I remember reading it in one swoop. It's simplicity makes it read like a fairy tale, but the depth of the words caught my heart immediately. The quest of the main character, Santiago, mirrored mine- and anyone else out there who has challenged their upbringing to seek new purpose in life. The story calls each person's destiny their "personal legend," and describes how we are born with these legends imprinted in our souls. Over time, self- doubt muffles our purpose, we lose sight of our destinies and settle for less than we were designed for. The story of Santiago takes us beyond this downfall, and lovingly displays how we can each return to our original path. We can all discover our personal legends.

I recommend this book to anyone and everyone. It was a simple yet powerful introduction of spirituality to me. Thanks to my dear friend, The Alchemist changed my life for the better.
